This project aims to examine the gaze, a cinematic theory developed by Laura Mulvey in the 1970s. Her work has been built upon by other thinkers in subsequent decades to explore how women view and present themselves.

The two ideas that drive this project are representation and agency.

• How do women wish to be represented in images

• How do the images demonstrate that women have the ability to make decisions for themselves, without recourse to a male

To complete the project I will work with female models and ask them how they want to be represented by choosing three words. The models will then decide how the photographs should look and direct the photo shoot.

How do they want to experience their own gaze?
